Why Does My Carpet Still Smell Like Dog Pee?

Written By: admin on December 2, 2009 6 Comments

We have had this carpet for only 5 months and it was brand new when it was put in we have had my puppy for the same amount of time we have had the carpet. It is hard to train my puppy because we live in the northern part of the states so the winters are really cold here and we got her during the winter and she is a small dog she is a toy fox terrier amd she would freeze to death if we would take her out side. The winters here are in the negative numbers all winter long and a little bit in the spring. We also live in an upstairs apartment so that is also an inconvenience. So she would always pee and poop in the floor but when we first got her she did her business on the puppy pad. So now my carpet smells like pee you can smell it when you walk in the room. I always clean up her pee with first putting down baking soda over the pee and then when that dried i would wipe up as much as i could and then i would vacuum and then i would use a puppy cleaner and scrub the area and then i would vacuum over that. So today i used a Bissell pro heat 2 and it still smells a little even after i rinsed the carpet on the water only dial. I did exactly how the instructions say on how to use it properly. Why does it still smell bad? How can i get the smell to come out? I cant get new carpet because i live in an apartment on a military base and we have to ask them before we can do anything like that and they dont know we have a puppy yet so we could get introuble for it because we are supposed to get her registered and microchipped but we have never done that yet.

For carpet you need to use the straight stuff. You also need to make sure you find all of the spots where Fifi has peed. Get a black light. It will show the spots. Mix Apple Cider Vinegar and dish soap about 3 to 1 using more Vinegar. Soak the area, immediately blot up the liquid. You may have to do this a couple times. After you can’t smell the urine use baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and water. Do the same as above. The pee may be all the way down to the floors, so you need to make sure to soak the area. Also, the best way to get the liquid up is to use the Sham Wow…it really works good. You need to make sure you get up all the liquid so that you don’t get mold.
Dry the area completely with a hair dryer. You don’t want it to dry by itself.

I think that shampooing sometimes just pushes the pee into the foam underneath the carpet. Sometimes carpet is ruined depending on the circumstance. I lived in a house that ideally needed the carpet replaced. We did everything possible to restore it but it didn’t work. I would maybe have a pro carpet cleaner come out and try cleaning it or giving their opinion. In the mean time, microchip and register your dog. It’s worth it.

Why does almost everyone that rents or has an apartment get a dog or pet? They are a big liability and a lot of work. First you are breaking the Base law, a soldier will get in trouble for it and it is on his/her record permanently. Any way get it micro chipped, shots, and registered. Then HIRE a carpet cleaning service to clean it up. Be sure to tell that it is dog pee and poop smell you want to be cleaned as they have to have chemicals to do it. You cannot purchase them. There is a fine for the animal being there, it usually comes through increased rent. My daughter on the base has a $50. fee for the animals, and pays for carpet replacement. After all one cannot expect the next tenants that may have a baby crawl and suck on the floor with animal pee in it. Would you want your face on it. Think of this every time someone gets on the floor. It is a lot cheaper without an animal.

The best product you can use is called Urine off-You can buy it here:http://www.findanyfloor.com/OnlineFloorS…
I was at a flooring convention and it flew off the shelves! It will work so buy it! Urine-Off is the only product on the market that carries both the “Seal of Approval” from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), and is endorsed by Interface Flooring.

Normally an Enzyme based cleaner like Nature’s Miracle or Urine Off would be enough to take the smell out of your carpet, however, since you’ve used detergents on the spot, they won’t work. Enzyme cleaners cannot be used anywhere detergents have been used in the past. The detergent will kill the bacteria that eats away at the odor.
What you need is a product called “K.O.E” It stands for Kennel Odor Eliminator and it’s not an enzyme based cleaner, so it’s perfect for use where someone might have used detergents. I live in an apartment as well, and I have cats so making sure that the smell that was here when I moved in was completely gone was really important so my cats wouldn’t start marking the carpets when they never had before.
For 3 years I used bottles and bottles of the enzyme based cleaners on the same spot that would go away and then come back. I finally found KOE, used it once last year, and have never needed it again (although I do keep a bottle on hand because everyone and their sister asks me for it lol).
All you do is mix up a batch (a cap full to a bucket of water) and soak the area, then allow to dry. I put it in my Little Mean Green Machine, right in with detergent and wash the carpet, suck it up and then spray some onto it without the detergent and let it sit. It can take a few days to dry, and until then you have a very strong floral perfume smell, but once it’s gone, it’s gone, and there is no more pet smell (not even tom cat - which is next to impossible to conquer).
I order mine from my vet and it takes a day or two for it come in, but you can also order it online through several websites. http://www.amazon.com/KOE-Kennel-Odor-El… being one of them.

I had that problem too. Just wait open a window let the carpets dry completely, then if it still smells run the bissell again. if the carpets are white you can add a tablespoon of bleach to the steam cleaners water. But if the carpets not white DONT try bleach! It’s gonna take a few tries but the smell will come out.
